Here we go with another funny from a client. She is new and wrote to me straight away with her concerns about a packet of information we sent her. Like all bureaucratic agencies, we have lots of paperwork. When we are first appointed to a case, an initial packet of info is sent to the client, detailing the general process, and asking them to fill out some forms for us.
One of the forms has several questions on it, and one of those is something like "What proceeding are you attacking?" The desired response is "sentencing", or "conviction", or "dismissal of a post-convictino petition" or "denial of a motion to suppress", something like that. Obviously, we are not stuck with these answers, so I honestly do not know why it is in the from, but since I am not queen, it is not my problem.
So I get this letter. It is nicely hand-written, clearly, with correctly spelled words. This gets my attention straight off, even though it is four pages long and that usually makes me cry. I get halfway through the first page when we come to the part about "attacking". She tells me she is not attacking anything, but merely filing a notice of appeal like all convicted people do. What is more, she is offended that we would ask her such a question about what is she attacking.
Maybe you do not see why this is funny. There are several reasons why it is funny, the most significant being that she is convicted of murdering a woman and chucking her away in a hiding place, and I am pretty sure she admits that she did it.
Evidently, she has gotten all the attacking out of her system.

Concern from a client

I dunno - once an attacker always an attacker (except in her case)? Also, you should ask her if the family of the woman she allegedly murdered is offended?
How silly - and yet, how silly on the part of the government for asking such a question. Heck, I have an MBA and that question didn't make sense to me either...
And since when are you NOT queen?
It is a stupid question---of course it is, it was designed by the Supreme Court. Whatcha gonna do?
I think I will NOT ask her that about the family, thank you very much-- I am supposed to be on her side! oy- it looks like an interesting case though, with a defense of others defense. That does not come up that often
Meanwhile, I have a "see me re this" note from the boss on a letter from another client complaining about me not confirming with him every single time I receive a letter from him. I have nothing to say, so why would I do that? Makes me crazy. Not only is acknowledging receipt of his letters a waste of time, having a meeting on it is a further waste of time.
I love how these people think the way to better service is to complain more.
Let's see where that gets him
What is a defense of others defense?
It is very similar to self-defense--except in certain circumstances you can defend other people with the same force they are being threatened with. For example, someone breaks in your house and instead of trying to hurt you, they go after the Big Nasty---you can defend him the same as if it was you being threatened.
It only applies in certain circumstances, so it rarely comes up.
It should be interesting
So, she is saying she murdered this person in defense of someone else?
Well I do not have the record first, but the gist of the story that I ahve gathered so far is that she was protecting her young son from the woman.
Well good for you she is done attacking since you may be dealing with her... Yours is a job of bravery i don't think I could work with poeple i didn't trust or were murders all the time i'd feel little scared..
Desiree
Well I am not hanging out with these folks, we do all our business via mail or occasionally telephone. Rarely do I ever meet them in person
Now some of the people I work with.....a whole other story!
now THAT was funny........killing someone and not attacking.....
OK I find this really funny too, in a way I understand her and thats scarey... kinda. An Attack is, to some, a violent and decisive action. If you are a person familiar with violence, merely filling out paperwork and walking the walk in a court room does not truely constitute an attack in one such persons mind mind. Crazy isn't it? I think it comes down to the violence one has lived with to their perception of an attack.
