Today's sale news

The morning NCHA sale looked all right to me--I did not see all of it but a fair amount.

One I was looking forward to was The Squeaker--I think of him as much like my ol Grandpa horse---he is half his age and won 280K instead of 130K, but with the change in purses over the years, it is pretty comparable. And the Squeaker is only 14 right now and Gramps is 27, but they both sold at this sale (Gramps was 22). The Squeaker brought about 18K, and I cannot imagine how much fun he must be--it looks like a drunk monkey could win money on him. That may not be true, but he looked great for a grown man, and it is amazing to me that any cutting horse can even walk by that age.

The thing that caught my attention other than having seen his name forever was that he is bred so much like my Squeak--same dad, obviously, but their mothers are also very closely related. His dam is Haidas Queen out of Docs Haida and my Squeaks dam is Haidas Seeker whos granddam is Docs Haida. When you put it that way, it does not sound so close does? I just get excited to see HOW powerful Docs Haida is, even generations away, and I do not think she gets the credit she should.

Now I am having the happy evening---watching the yearling sale on the big TV, dogs are resting on the couches, the pig is cleaning the floor, I am chatting with my cohorts online about every horse that does through and even better, all the work is done (thanks LeaAnn!) This sale is making it obvious how the industry is changing----there is no longer any room for people like us--who have really nice mares, but will never be able to afford the great ones, and even if we could, would not be able to pay for 6 breedings in a year for that one mare, and the accompanying ETs. There has not been a horse go through here that is not out of a super mare who needs no introduction--even the list of sires that matter is shrinking. I think the new sale highlighting up and coming sires is a great idea, as we need to change this. The prices on the get of the great ones is coming down, but they are still new luxury car and even new house money, and you cannot blame people for paying it, as they are as close to a sure thing as you can get when dealing with living things with brains (or no brains as the case may be), but it is sad to see that the days of playing at that level are not in the next few years for us.

More news from the sales

You might as well get used to this, as I will probaly keep doing this for a few days--there is nothing more fun to me than a good horse sale, let alone a whole week of them! As I browse the catalogs, I always find more info I did not know about our own horses.

Today's news is that my old girl Nita has a little more claim to fame than even I knew. While I know the bare numbers on her produce, I did not know all the details.

For example, her daughter Nita Hickory by Doc's Hickory was the Reserve Champion at Congress back in the day. She sold yesterday, and I would have loved to have had her since I think so much of Nita herself. She is in foal to Hes a Peptospoonful--someone got a great buy on her. Her weanling by Spoonful sold as well. Both Nita Hickory and the Spoonful baby hold their tail just like Nita does--up and to the left--every baby she ahd for me did that, until Gypsy. What a funny characteristic to pass along!

Also in the notes, I learned that her son Lonnie Hickory, also by Doc's Hickory, won the Canadian Open Futurity. I have no idea where that was held, but Carrie is tracking that down for me.

These were her first two foals ever. She then went on to be bred to Smart Little Uno for 6 or 7 of them, then I bought her and bred her to High Brow Hickory.

I sold all of those except the last one, my sweetheart Gypsy. So what does this make Gypsy to those Doc's Hickory horses--not quite 3/4 siblings are they? What DO you call that? I bet Missy knows.

Finding these piece of info in the footnotes of sales makes them so much fun for me. It is strange how the info included changes year after year--this is hardly the first time Nita has been written up in the catalogs, but this was the first time I got these details--they usually focus on Uno Ed and Uno Nita, two of her other winners.

A sweet inquiry

I will admit, I mostly get irritated by emails I get about horses for sale, as most are spam, or the people are crazy. But every once in a while, I get one that is cute--and this is one of them. Notice that this 8 year old (if indeed it is REALLY a child, and it probably is) spells better than most adults, and most of the time, writes complete sentences.

The scammers should hire her, as she communicates way better than they do.

Message regarding Playboys Rondeevous:

So. She's beautiful, a reiner, and has Triple Crown blod in her! I wish I could buy her. My mom and dad said I have to be able to buy a horse and have enough money to board it. I'm only 8. And we don't live on a horse farm. But my aunt's mom owns a horse farm that's 90 minuites away. It's cinda crummy. (Well compaired to where I horseback ride at). A couple months ago, I wanted to be a jocky, then after that I wanted to be a barrel racer, now I want to win 1st place at the AQHA horse show. The place where I go riding at there's a horse named Spring and is 2 too. And she's a sorrel! Well, I can't buy Playboys Rondeevous. Even if I could, I would let other people ride her and I woud just love her. Oh well. Oh yah, I'm not giving you my e-mail because I can't even buy her.

Happenings at the NRHA Futurity

While we were disappointed to no longer own Genuine Appeal when she should be showing at the 2007 NRHA Futurity, we are not without connection to it altogether.

Sly's maternal sister, Lemon Twist Sandy, is owned by Tim McQuay. He has consigned her to the Market Place sale on Friday. She is in foal to Reminic N Dun It, for a full sibling to Lemon Twist Nic.

Lemon Twist Nic scored a 220 in the first go of the show this week. Let's cross our fingers that the second run (which should happen this afternoon) goes as well or better, and gets us in the finals!

Here are the details of Lemon Twist Sandy

I like this because it shows the versatility of this family of horses. Sly's sire is pure cutting, as is his bottom side, but this shows that they can cut and rein, and do anything else put to them.
Go LEMON TWIST NIC !!!!!!!!

Some changes are in store

We need to change some things around here at Onn-A-Wym Farms, so I have placed some ads on equinehits.com in an attempt to be more aggressive about selling horses.

You can see them all at
http://www.equinehits.com/find_owner.php?userid=58942

More will be listed soon. If you see any on our website that interest you, feel free to talk to me about them, and maybe we can make a deal

Please spread the word.
