This is one of Mama Kat's prompts---from her Writer's Workshops-- at http://mamakatslosinit.blogspot.com
This week, we have the usual four choices to choose from. One involves being laid off and I don't even like to think about things like that or I will have a reason to be a crazy person. Another was to list our 5 current favorite things---which I could so do, too, but they are all kind of crazy. The last option was to share a recipe, and everyone knows I cannot cook, which I reminded myself of last nite when I made chicken pot pie and screwed it up, despite having a previously successful experience with it.
I think I can swing this CD thing though because I remember it so clearly.
When I was in seventh grade or so, the gadget guru brought home a CD player. They had not been on the market very long, and this one was really little, like the ones that eventually everyone had in their cars. Remember those? They had a cord with cassette tape on the end which is how you played it through your regular stereo. God only knows what it cost as they were so new and this one was really nice. Dad is all about some technology even though he never ends up actually using the things.
I got to have it in my room. I played the hell out of that thing, and loudly. I do not remember the actual going to get the first CDs, but I totally remember what they were. He got a Placido Domingo thing, of all the things you could think up, and I got two of them. Odd choices they were, looking back on it, but at the time, it made perfect sense
I am not even going to give you hints, as there is no way anyone will guess this stuff.
The first one was Madonna--Like a Virgin, I am sure. I am sure we all had it. I loved me some Madonna, I was crazy into music back then and I wanted to be her so bad I could taste it. Heck, I still do, I think. I was not so much good at trying to be her. That is probably normal for girls my age.
I remember calling into the radio station and requesting her songs and trying to record that stuff on tapes--and getting so mad at the DJs who would talk over the songs. Don't tell me I am the only one who did that foolishness, you know you did it too. We had the entertainment house back then, and lots of requesting and recording was going on in there like I was some sort of radio mogul, for Pete's sake. We would dance around in the garage, which was a finished place to get your kids out of your house and was really nice.
Now here is the funny one--the other CD I got that first day was Dokken-Under Lock and Key. Did all girls that age have such weird taste in music? I am confident that some boy was responsible for that call. Maybe it was a southern Illinois thing.
I flat wore that CD player out. It was swell to have because no one else had one and you know I am all about that sort of thing--I could not be more childish sometimes.
I guess I should be glad the prompt did not require to tell about my first 45 or album--but I could have done that
What was your first CD? Do you remember it as well as I do these?

I am STILL all about music as are all three of the kids but especially the girls. Both girls were in marching band, Sarah was first chair flute, Court played tenor sax and alto sax for both marching band AND concert band then she started on the French Horn too but didn't keep that up. She did teach her self to play the guitar tho and still does that.
I didn't get into CD's till I was an adult. At Christmas time I found out that they, too, are on the way out. A friend wanted a CD/radio combo and it was really hard to find a CD player. Apparently the newest thing is going to be downloads (software) for MP3 players and such. Actually I think that is better as when a CD no longer works, what do you do with them? You can get more songs on an MP3 player too and it's more portable.
I like a little of everything, rock-some specific hard rock-new age-country-soft rock-oldies (my fav is still Fleetwood Mac).
I don't remember my first CD! I remember the first CD my parents bought with the first CD player - my parents kinda rule, and it was Led Zeppelin IV. And the first record I bought with my own money was Born in the USA. Look at that butt!
Hm! think the first CD player came in a car we bought.
Now a history lesson----Records on a phonograph-----8-track players, followed by cassette players. And we "modernized" and got one for-----Neil Diamond-----
Enter a couple of teen agers who added their music, but took it when they left for college. Soooooo. Back to Neil Diamond. hehehe
But the car with CD---ah! Ha! needed one in the house too.
However the satelitte TV has great music on it so the "dust settles" on the player.
Plus DH is NOT A BUTTON PUSHER.
And don't even go into all that OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL STUFF for music.
Yikes---enjoy Carol
You have a good memory! I have no idea what the first CD I bought was! Considering the time period, those were perfect picks, though I would of picked White Snake over Dokken.
I most certainly did that with tapes!
I got a cd player for my 8th grade graduation. My first cd was Soul Asylum/Grave Dancer's Union. I still have it. I love that cd.
