Bonaire--the best of the islands

Finally, I get back to the vacation travelogue-- and on to Bonaire, which was by far the best place on the trip. I had really high expectations for it, just based on the reviews of the diving alone, but I wondered if it would have much else to offer to keep a person busy for a week.

Well I think it does--I could just sit there and look at how stunning the water is, and the gorgeous colors of the buildings---it is so beautiful. Every other island paled in comparison, they really did.

It is not terribly commerical, but still has some cute restaurants and bars. We only saw a few resorts, such as the Divi Flamingo, which was just up from where we docked. In my search for a dive package to Bonaire months ago, I had run across a listing for that place, so was interested to see what it was really like. It looked like a fun place, and the best part was that the beach was accessible to wheelchairs. We hung out there on their little beach after we got done diving, since it was so handy. Barry snorkeled while I read, and he said he saw almost all the same fish we saw when we were diving.

Evidently Bonaire has a lot of flamingos--but we did not go anywhere to see them. I will definitely do that next time. They also have a donkey sanctuary that they are really promoting, and that will be fun to see--I love me an ass.

It is even gorgeous when it is overcast or the sun is going down.

I am sure this could qualify as a nervous breakdown island, but also a great dive weekend. My boss's boss (well until recently) has been there diving 22 times, and I can see why.

Of course, the real attraction is the diving. We did our first shore diove with Dive Inn, who were super nice people who sent us off on our own--our first solo dive. I will save those stories for the underwater photo post.

For sure, though, Bonaire is on the list for our dive trips with Amy B--we both loved it so much and I know she will too. Maybe 2009.

Holy Cow! ! ! Bonaire is picture book beautiful and really does exist. It is not so crowded that one can't see the beach sand and water. Wunnerful.

What a treat for me?

Well that beach was a little crowded since they let cruise ship people come to it, but the whole island is surronuded by a reef, and there are beaches all over that allow you to access the water to dive.

I am sure there are totally deserted places as well.

Plus, there was no nagging by anyone--the locals were friendly but not bugging anyone and it was very laid back.

When we were finishing our dive, a couple of girls were finishing their last snorkel at the dive shop and heading for the airoprt. The owner hugged them goodbye and told them no charge.

I like that attitude

That is soooo cool that you dive. Rob got his scuba certificate or whatever in Australia while he was there, and now he's taking a course here to get the next level up. I've always wanted to learn, it sounds amazing. I absolutely LOVE snorkeling, I could do that all damn day, so I can't imagine how beautiful diving must be. Especially in a place like that! I won't be going anywhere like that soon and Florida is uninteresting for diving. I guess it will just have to wait!
