The interview went well. I am sure I made an ass of myself, since I am not used to interviewing for such a thing. Even trying to tell her what I needed done was funny, as you get so used to seeing things as they are, you do not see what a mess it really is. I can interview attorneys and law students all day long, which really ought to be a lot harder!
I showed her around, talked about what we needed, and then I sent her into Ding's stall to halter her and fiddle with her a bit. I did something else and watched out of the corner of my eye. She had her haltered and happily leading around and groomed before I knew it. That was not totally shocking, as Ding is such a nice kid, butyou never know with yearlings how they will behave on any given day.
Then, as a REAL test, I sent her into Hammer's stall. That kid has been hell on wheels since weaning. I did other stuff and left her alone. He is haltered and dragging a drag rope (which he usually wraps around his neck so it serves little pupose other than as a handle), so she did not have to do that, but I wanted to see mostly how she reacted when he blew up, which he always does.
It did not work out the way I planned at all. He NEVER got mad, never acted up--nothing. He would come to her of his own accord, allow her to touch his face and head, which he HATES, and would respond amazingly well to any pressure she put on the lead rope. He never once turned his butt to her, which is his number one evasion technique with us.
I know he is not a bad baby, but there is a major personality conflict between him and Barry. They both are mad within minutes. There was nothing like that with LeaAnn--he was relaxed, happy and interested in her. He even went to Madison standing outside the stall to get loved on. He was wary of me, but I can understand why. Later that night though, he even came to greet me at the door and let me get him.
That was very impressive to me. It bordered on Marvin like, and I have never said that about anyone. I hope to God it was not a fluke.
I told her if she can swing a hammer to fix fence like she worked with him, I not only would have plenty of work for her, I would marry her.
She comes back at 3 pm today. I left her a list of things to start on--fix some fence boards, gut two foul stalls, and pick up the barn. She is only there for two hours, but I wanted to see how much she could do in a short time--I don't expect all that to get done, but I wanted to give her some options if it is raining when she is there.
This might be a really good thing
