Who knew? Although now that I think about it, I do not know why I am surprised. Head and Linda live in the same area where the attacked-by -dogs Slybaby lives, so it should have occurred to me that they would go see about him...yet I was still surprised when they called last nite and had just left there.
They went to the owner's house, said they were my friends and wanted to see short stuff to send me pics. Just went right up in there and stated their business, just like that.
They were shown to baby boy Tuff, who is already weaned. He was born on June 24, so he is not yet three months old. They were told he is weaned, because "she just needed them all weaned". He is in a paddock with 6 or 8 weanlings that came from South Dakota, and are at least 3, possibly 4 times his size. He is tiny tiny tiny, and has not even shed his foal coat yet.
As far as good things, there were plenty of buckets lined up for feeding, and no one was skinny. There was some hay there.
I do not know how to explain the condition of the Slybaby other than that he was born early, weaned way too early, and is in a pack of horses who evidently are not missing any of their meals. His butt is sunken in, he is ribby and needs his feet done--but she did say she was worming them all today, even though none of them are halter broke yet, so it should be a spectacle. Not that mine are all halter broke yet either--some are- but they are not weaned yet and I did not just buy a truckload of more of them, and am not awaiting delivery of another truckload of them.
I do have pictures of him, but I cannot bear to post them. I can only pray she does not tell people that he is a Slybaby, as I do not want saddled with responsibility for his condition (you know how people can be about things like that). While the owner claims that she has gotten too big too fast (61 horses, you think?), Tuff is not for sale as he has ben through too much. You would think that would entitle him to a reasonable amount of time nursing from his mother, but what do I know.
I sure hope this is a temporary condition and that things will be fine. I can only pray that things will work out fine for all of them there.

wonder if she could be convinced to part with him. I haven't even seen pix but he tugs at my heart. Poor litte man.
Some people are just ignorant on how animals ought to be cared for! Sorry this had to happen to you Paige. I know it has to weigh on you too. I'll pitch in money towards his purchase if she will part with him.
It sounded to me like there was no way in hell she would let go of him---from what she said to me on the phone and from the way she told Linda that most were for sale but not him.
But maybe that will change.
What a nice offer though.
Hopefully she will keep them in good shape and get him in it....and recognize that one size does not fit all on horses
It just irks me that he was early and is already weaned.... makes me want to spit. He needed his mama for a good long time..... Alright. I will shut up now, this is none of my business but the offer stands if she wants to sell.
Tell me about it-- for all the talking about how special he is, for all he has been through--how was that anyway to reward him.
Maybe there is something we dont know, like mama was wrong or something. Her baby died last year from septicemia, but that was a lack of knowledge error.
I appreciate the support, I am trying to be circumspect, but I am so worried for him
Oh Paige, count me in on donanting toward the baby buy back fund. He will not do good with all of those other larger foals in the same pen, he needs to beout of there. What was she possibly thinking removing him from his dam, I wonder if she sold the mare or the mare died. But I do know Tuff will not thrive in that situation, not being so much smaller and already underweight. He sounds like Speedy did until we started One N Only, now he looks like a totally different horse. I wish I could take Tuff and bring him here.
