of themselves to their foals that they have nothing left for themselves? Lucky does that, so its a struggle to keep weight on her when she nurses. One I am losing, although not at the rate I normally do. I considered pulling Riot off of her with the first wave of weaning this weekend, but Barry convinced me to wait a couple of weeks.
Riot is in such good shape, so fit from just playing with Grandpa--she does not have other foals to play with and never has. That is part of the reason that I want to wean her, so she can be with other foals and learn that social structure. I guess it can wait a few more weeks though, so she can soak up more of whatever Lucky has to offer her.
I sure do like this baby girl.

Why do some mares give so much

If Sugar looked as good as her I would be happy. Sugar is much thinner but hopefully not for long.
Dolly does the exact same thing. She looks very similar too. She usually gets sucked down bad, really bad. This time I was able to prevent that from happening so badly, but she still is no where near what I like. I did pull her filly off of her a week early, it's made a difference already. It doesn't seem to affect the filly any either, she's not dropped weight, nor did she seem to really be to upset at her mother being on the other side of the pastures.
I think that some mares are just like that, they just take anything we put into them and put it into their foals. Kind of frustrating.
Why do you think I posted THIS pic Missy? I will send you a pic of her that shows much more accurately her condition--it will probably make you feel better about Sugar
she doesn't look that bad Paige. And the filly is b-i-g.
She is a big girl, isnt she?
Combination of Lucky doing so much for her and all that senior feed, beet pulp and soy oil she gets to eat as part of the geriatric wing here!
I suspect she will be sorely disappointed when she is weaned on to Strategy in the next couple of weeks!
