HUGE Hawkeye development

WAHOO! Hallelujah! We have a really wierd Hawkeye Development. In taking his photos tonight (while we had a farm full of not so horsey company) , I made a huge discovery-- Hawkeye has blown an abcess on his underline. The first pic is totally misleading, because the angle is all messed up, but it is midway of the swelling you can see better in the second pic. The first pic of the actual hole is taken from the ground up, angled from behind his elbow, so no wonder it is misleading

I slathered him all up with drawing salve, did a little jig celebrating the presence of jism (which I think may have scared the company a bit--oh well), and actually felt some relief.

What this means, I have no idea, of course, but it is fascinating how the hole (and there may be two of them, hard to tell) is in the middle of the really hard part of his swelling. It is so strange. He may have even been a tad tender in that area as I tried to squeeze out some more goo.

I do not know what this means for our prognosis, but I am sure excited to find out. There is not much I like more than a good abcess, especially considering the alternatives!

Paige- Could this be a puncture wound? We had a weanling several years back that had similar symptoms and he had blunt force trauma and a very small puncture wound. Opened the hole up, used a pipette to infuse nolvasan for several days straight, smz's for 10 days and he was healing right up. He did have some muscle wasting too. Just a thought. Jami

Sure could be, although surely we would have been able to see SOMETHING prior to now. Snake biite has been suggested, as has pigeon fever from the very beginning, but it is so rare here that it was kind of written off.

This is just wild, isnt it? But I can tell you that I feel so much better since last nite, I am like a new person.

I am off to see what this morning has brought with him

sounds weird but it's a relief when it's an abcess rather than a bone or tendon damage isn't it? Abcess are fairly straight foreward as long as whatever caused it isn't still imbedded.

If there is something in there, it would be swell if it came out.

At this point, I am not convinced it is not pigeon fever, I don't care how rare it is around here.

Whatever it is, I think we are on the upswing, and the goo will be cultured ASAP to get us an answer
