Hawkeye thoughts

After consulting with the vet and doing some more tests, the preliminary verdict is either a shoulder fracture or very severe muscle/ possibly nerve damage from blunt trauma.

Holy Martha.

The new protocol is Bute and stall rest for at least a month, and cold hosing to get the swelling down to a manageable point so that we can x-ray and diagnose for real.

The wierd thing is that he is not hurting very bad and that just does not make sense to me--I am grateful for that like you cannot know, but wtf?

On a good note, it rained hard for 20 minutes and dropped from 95 to the 60s. That will make doctoring and setting up the sick ward a whole lot more comfy than it would have been

It just doesn't make sense. I can't wait to see what the xrays show. Let me think about it for a while and come back...

I hope he comes out okay. Just remember different horses have different tolerance levels for pain...remember when Jet was cut down his front leg to the bone & was pawing in the cross ties the next day cause he was bored of standing there for me to clean all of his wounds? Still makes you feel better than the horse who acts he is dying from the pain

Good point. Surely there would be some reaction from him when I did all that flexing to him though?
He had Bute last nite, but none today, but that is for inflammation as much as anything

Just an observation, his shoulder points don't look like they are at the same level. It could be how the picture was shot, but you might want to look at that.

Had a goat once that started not being able to use his front leg. Took him to the small animal vet who decided to put a splint on the leg. It didn't get better, so took him to the large animal vet who said(without even an x-ray) that he had a broken shoulder. You could feel the crack in it. Vet said to leave him alone and it would heal eventually. He was right and goat went on to live many more years. Of course, he didn't have to be sound to ride or anything. I would think more along the lines of maybe cracked? Let us know. Linda

Ahh Paige, I hope everything turns out OK with him. If it's not one thing it's another huh? Got ya covered on the prayers here.

I certainly would think with all the flexing you did that he would react at SOME point.

Hoping for just tissue/muscle damage and the swelling pushing on a nerve...

Keep the faith!

How is the patient tonight?

Nothing different tonight.

And Kristine, I think you are right about the shoulder points---bad f'ed up huh? I will take new pics tomorrow and pay close attention to angles, so we can work from there. If there is something in particular you want to see, let me know, so I can get it. I need all the help I can get on this one

I would think straight on from the front. Even if his head is in the way,on level ground. Just as long as you can see his shoulders. He should be even on both sides. I would think if he wasn't even, that he would have something popped out.

See if you can find a chiropractor or massage therapist and see what they say.

I agree that his shoulder points don't look at the same level.

Reminds me of Dolly - except her problem area is her hip.

Praying for him and you.

I can find a chiro or massage therapist, but no way in hell am I putting anyone on him until we see whether there is a fracture, which cannot be determined until the swelling goes down. Hopefully soon
