When Baby grows up

It is kind of bittersweet. We picked up baby Cash from her refresher course on Friday nite. I guess I need to stop calling her that. She is 5 years old and I still recall the day she was born like it was yesterday---it was May 5, 2002, and I happened to stop by the barn after lunch one day--it was raining like mad, the kind that soaks you to the skin just from taking one step from the car to the barn. And there she stood in the first foaling stall, surprise! I was so thrilled she was a filly, and she was so cute. I loved her from the very first second.
I had to go back to work right after that, and there sat the parents of a client - unannounced, but having driven 6 hours one way to see me. God only knows what they thought of their son's bizarre lawyer, all rained on and covered in baby filth.

Since then, Cash has made life interesting--when she was 6 days old, she stuck a t-post in her armpit, and when we had to hose it out, she threw herself on the ground in a fit. I was sure she would drown in the puddle the hose made before she would give in, but it was sure funny. I should have known then she had a stubborn streak. Her pitching me on the ground twice in one day was another good tip off

We did not have her started until she was 3, since she was pretty small, and then we sent her to a cutting guy for a bit, with the intention of selling her. That did not go the way I wanted to, so I rode her all that year. We had some disagreements later that year and I fell in love with another horse, so I left her alone.

This year, I knew she needed to get back in the program, so we sent her to my friend Susan to work on her, just putting miles on her and reminding her who was in charge (not her, in case you missed that). She did a great job with her, as I knew she would, she does so well with young ones that need consistency and time.

Thanks Susan! It is nice to know that Cash KNOWS what to do and how to behave, and I know I am going to enjoy her this year. I sure loved our ride yesterday but that is a whole other post!
