Popping out all over !

Diablo had a baby on Mother's Day. And she did not just have a baby---look at what she made!
When I choose who to breed my mares to, I look at several things. Color is not one of them. It is not important in the big scheme of things--cutting ability is the most significant. Pedigree is vital. Conformation is up there, but cutting horse conformation is quite different from other types of horses, so what we look for might be different than other disciplines. Several other factors go into it--a built in promotional program matters to me. I do not want to explain to anyone who the sire is--I want them to KNOW who he is when I say his name.
But sometimes you get lucky and this happens. Sometimes you get it all in one package. And as ridiculous as it is, sometimes flash and color sells horses. So I am not sending this one back.
This baby girl is sired by Highlight Cat, who is a super nice horse all by himself. I am too superstitious to ask for the things like all this frosting she has, or all the chrome, or the coontail. I just ask for healthy and straight legged, and with some talent.
And look at what I got!
I still cannot believe it really. We hit the mother lode with this one.
Long-legged, like Ds babies already are--and thank God, AQHA changed the rules to ensure that a QH x QH is still a QH, or I wold be the proud owner of a paint horse. Not that there is anything wrong with that, if that is what you set out to do--which I do not.
So cute.
I have had Slybabies with coontails, and Rondee had one, but never have I had this much show up at birth. And look inside her thighs--white hairs all over in there, like she ran through a puddle of white paint. That is a High Brow Cat thing, and I love it

The weird thing is that since the sire is not registered as a roan but as a chestnut with rabicano markings, this one will have ot be registered the same way. And she was way roanier than the baby I do have that is officially roan.
And look at these crazy leg markings!

Quite the mother's day surprise.

Foaling season is almost over--only Squeak is left. Gypsy was checked today to see if she was ready to breed and after I overnited the contracts, etc, of course she was not. The doc showed up early while I was having my nap, so I have to check in with him to confirm some things. I have a poopy Boonsmal baby, and Snap's child has some odd tummy stuff as well--way too young for that. Her tendons are coming down though, so that is good. She will likely get to go out tomorrow nite once I figure out how to handle her being out on the pasture but still cut off of her mother being fed grain until the belly settles down.

so many things to think about around here

That is (to me) the prettiest foal I've seen yet. I would take her home with me if I could. I think she is just precious.

I hear ya on "not breeding for color", but you have to admit that when you get everything else you want...getting some fancy frosting is a great feeling.;) She's a cutie! Can't wait to see her all filled out.
