No I am not kidding

I had a birthday party for Slater tonight. Yes, he is a dog. No, I do not care if you think I am insane.

Mostly, I did it for the funny photo opportunities, but all the same, I had a party for my dog. No one else could come, as there was a tragedy that interfered today. My parents's dog Nudie had to be put to sleep this afternoon, which of course put them in the non-celebratory mood. In fact, it put a damper on the festivities for everyone. It breaks my heart, because I know how horrible it feels to lose one, and because no one can fix it. It also makes me appreciate the time I have with my own dogs, even if it is silly time like this.
One of Slate's favorite things in the world is Dairy Queen, so Barry brought DQ for everyone last nite because he thought he would not be here tonight. When we put the dish in his food bowl, he put the whole thing in his mouth and took it to my recliner where he laid it down, I guess to rest until he wanted it. I had to get it and put it back two times, before it occurred to me to dump it out of the DQ dish and put it in his bowl like that. Duh. That is why we have leather furniture though.
Simba was very glad to see that she got ice cream too.
Tequila even got hers delivered to her room. She has clearly never had ice cream, which makes me sad. I know it is not good for them, but Slater loves it so much, he gets it some times. After we convinced Quila to try it, she loved it and gobbled it out of a bowl.
And what is a birthday without birthday cake? Since Barry got to be home tonight unexpectedly, we had to have the real party. That included party hats and cake. Simba is such a nice girl, taking her treat.
Slater gobbled so fast he ended up making such a big mess, that Simba ended up with most of it, eating it off the floor. And that is why we no longer have carpet in most of our house.
Barry refuses to take a decent picture--he looks completely squirrelly here. And really he is only half squirrely. Just the kind of doofus who will wear a party hat for his dog's birthday. Plus, I think Simba had her tongue stuck in his ear. She loves him.
Quila was not sure about the hat thing, but she wore it. This whole birthday thing confused her, but maybe that is because she does not have one. God willing, we will celebrate her Gotcha day this fall.
I cannot explain this.
All that partying wore Slate slap out. He pitched over in the floor by Barry's chair, rolled up on his back and went to sleep.

Even Boce got to get in on the party action. Well, he got a hat. Because that is just funny. Oddly, he minded the hat less than anyone. Since he has no neck, the elastic went in his mouth. I don't think he even noticed, he went to eating his dinner like it was not even there.

Now find me someone else who has a pig who wears birthday party hats. I knew I would find my niche in the blogging world eventually.

oh.my.god.

What a great night. And ice cream is only bad for dogs that have digestive systems that can't handle it (much like some people who react badly to dairy). Once in awhile for sure won't hurt the party goers.

Slate is the most handsome Dane ever, Simba is regal, but Quila....she touches me. I heart her. I am so glad she got to have ice cream....even if she did not know what it was.

You are a good woman Paige Strawn, but I promise not to tell anyone....k?

Every dog deserves a great birthday!! Your dogs are beautiful. The brindle Dane (?) reminds me a lot of my friends' dog, Sadie. She is HUGE! Really neat dog.
Sorry to hear about your parents' dog. :( It's always tough to have to say goodbye to a pet.

With only fury children, I find it perfectly wonderful to celebrate their birthdays. I bring mine down to the dog bakery in town and the baker gives the dogs a spoonful of doggie icing. They love it!!! I then get their favorites, "pup tarts" and "Drooly Dream Bars". I'm sure mine would love some DQ too!

A birthday party for "best friends"

why Not!!!! You are not crazy, everyone else is---and I would have come over to celebrate if I lived close enough. Especially for "doggies and DQ's"

Maybe your Mom's "Nudie" and my "Girleepup" are cavorting up there having fun.

Sorry Carol

What a great 'family' night at the Strawns! All your kids look awesome in their party wear!

It always surprises me when I see group pics of your Danes how different all 3 are from each other - and not just coat color.
Your photos allow their personalities to show.

Glad it was a nice night and that BS got to participate as well

Hugs to your Mom and Dad.

What fun for everybody!

I am completely shocked that Slater was so tired he fell asleep on the floor. All that perfectly good furniture just sitting there? Poor guy must've been done in!

Hugs to your Mom & Dad. I know how much it hurts. :(

First You are not weird for having a birthday party (with hats) for your dog! Second -How cute is that? The hats on the dogs & pig! And (cute) Barry!(even if he is making a face) What troopers. Not sure my pup would wear a hat and I'm pretty sure the hubby wouldn't:)
Have got to know how you managed to get pics of the dogs with NO Devil Eyes???? OK there is one but still!

Having a birthday party for your dog isn't crazy as long as your husband wears the party hat. hee hee. You can ignore my facebook comment since I said "Poor Barry didn't get to be there".

I love that you put the pig's hat string in his mouth. That is too funny!

That is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time! Thanks for sharing it with us! My dog would have had that hat off her head and ripped to shreds in 3 seconds flat.

Very cute. Your pups are very much loved and you are definately not crazy for celebrating their birthdays. We always give Maggie and now Max extra treats on their "gotcha" days as we don't know when their actual birthdays are. Lucky also got grain every year on her "gotcha" day.

Hugs to your mom and dad.

I have to be honest and tell you I was going to skip by this post cause I have so many to catch up on. Sooooo glad I didn't.

Firstly, you know I love a picture of Barry. That's eye candy for me (lol).
And the dogs with the ice cream/cake and birthday hats???!! Too frickin funny! Never mind the pig!
Sorry about your moms dog though. That really is sad.

I love their party. I wish I was there. Did they get to have BK cheeseburgers as the main course? They should have. What's birthday without one?

I agree with Holly. I heart Tequila too. She seems so lost and bewildered by all of it. It makes me want to hold her in my lap. I could explain it to her. I know I could.

Happy Birthday, Slater! For real, I wanna be in on the Gotcha Day celebration.

OMG, those are the best pics I"ve seen in a LONG time! I'll have to try ice cream with our doggies too. They love everything else! The pig cracks me up too. We get cakes for our dogs' birthdays too, so you're not weird! Our dog loves my husband, just like yours...when he gets home from work and sits down, she climbs her front legs up (since she's big-mastiff mix) and puts her head on his shoulder for him to hug her...it touches me every night!

Oh my gosh, this is the funniest thing ever!! The pig in the hat!!! And the fact that the pig had the elastic in his mouth and just went on like business as usual. Ahhhhh...totally made my night.

Oh, and I gave you a little shout-out on my blog tonight. Because you are awesome. And you dress your dogs and pig up in party hats.
