Shocking assault to their systems

I am not kidding when I tell you that we have had a hell of an ice storm since last nite and it is not over yet. In all the years I have had horses, I have never seen icicles hang off of so many of them like this.
This is what the babies' first ice storm is doing to them---look at that poor butt! That is not snow just lying on her, that is iced on and is hanging on for dear life.

This is baby Shiloh's back--she is completely covered in ice pellets.
She does not look very amused--look at all the ice chunks in her mane
She is still cute though.
This is the only smart one of the broodmares--Melody--she was at least standing in the barn to get out of the sleet. Evidently she had not been there all day, as she too had icicles hanging off of her.
Nita seems to have the most ice on her, but it is no wonder with all that area of her back hanging so low. There is plenty of room to catch ice on there!
This is Nita too--she has ice balls hanging from her tail and a chunk of tail hair was stuck to her butt.
Squeak appears to be pretty smart--she had a lot less ice on her. She has her own pen and turnout since she is blind, but there are some days when I swear she is faking it. In this pic, she is trying to get into the bucket of feed even though she was the only one that had already eaten. After this, while I was trying to take other pics, she went around the corner, and stuck her head under the fence and into a feed bucket that Lucky and Ammo were sharing--she took a few bites, and then she stole the bucket right under the fence. That would not be so odd for any other horse, but for one who supposedly cannot see the broad side of a barn, it is kind of interesting. She is also the most pleasant easy-going enjoyable horse I have ever known, so for her to pull a stunt like that cracked me up. Hell, I even let her keep it!

Xanadu was caked in ice. She was also not very amused by this whole deal. Not at all. She has 6 weeks until she is due to foal, as does Mel, Cash and someone else I cannot currently think of. Surprise crappy weather like this is why we do not breed for early babies--you never can tell what is going to happen--and can you imagine how miserable it would be to accidentally foal in this mess?

Miss Foxy is due in April I think. She needs to put on a little weight, I think, but she is doing okay for one who always struggles with her weight when in foal. She has the singularly most annoying habit I think--when she thinks she should be fed, she runs her teeth along something metal--like the corral panel that separates her pasture from Squeak's pen. I swear it makes my hair stand on end--she goes back and forth back and forth scraping her teeth on the metal. Creeps me right out. It is a good alarm though to tip me off to when she has not been fed her dinner, as I thought she had--she will not let me forget something like that.

This pic of Hotrod cracks me up--she is as pissed as I am about the weather.

If this keeps up, it will be a work at home day tomorrow-- I got stuck in my own driveway coming home tonight, and that is before the other 3-6 inches of snow arrive.

Poor horses! It must not bother them too much, though, or surely they'd go into the barn.

We had a lot of snow/ice over here as well. Tomorrow is our 2nd day off school, which is good timing as I'd have called in sick anyway (I have a horrible cough/sore throat), so it saved me 2 sick days.

Loved your horse pics. I can't wait to take more ice pics tomorrow. That is if I can even get the doors to my single wide open. Had some trouble with that this morning. Ahh, rural life. I love it.

You take such terrific pictures Paige; I envy that talent.

Up here in Manitoba, Canada the weather is more often extreme than not - my horses have had icy eyelashes since November! We have had a couple of days of rain this winter, not enough to have snowcone ponies though, mopstly just miserable snow & cold. The schools don't close until it -45 celcius...brrr

Poor babies. I am sure that is what Gunner and Hyde thought when they arrived here 3 years ago. Left your place where the grass was starting to grow to get here where we still had at least a month of snow.

Great pics.

Those poor ponies! Do you have to get the ice off or is it okay to just wait for it to go off on its own?

From Horse Student: I wondered about horses and the rain and ice. Now I know and my heart goes out to them. Can't they be put into a barn or are there too many. They could "huddle" together for warm.

We were out of power for 12 hours and our Girleepup who lives in our garage in her blanket lined box with a heat lamp got cold. We were preparing to bring her in the basement and LO AND BEHOLD the electric came on. I am glad cause she would not come in too easily as she is fearful of being "closed up"

Small town living still BEATS city life hands down.

would tell a sweet story too but it past Tuesday.

Enjoy and figure you were home today too. Carol

oh yeah, they all have access to barns---yet they choose to stand outside. WE have two huge barns--like over 100 feet long- as well as several outbuildings---and in the back, there is very thick woods that would protect them if they did not want to be in a building.

They are just strange beasts. They are far more likely to use shelter to get away from sun than ice.

Now the boys here at the house do not have a drop of water or ice on them---they have been inside the whole time---they just came out to play in the snow now that it is over

Oh my goodness, poor babies! Here's hoping spring comes fast!

And, I'd like to present you an award! Check out my blog for more details!

Oh those poor babies. I would not be very amused myself if I were covered in ice.
I hope today went better for you.

Wow your horses don't have a very thick coat? Ours look like buffalos! Dang sleet.
When is your birthday, I would never let you be forgotten, no way! I do understand that feeling. When My cowboy and I were dating (it had been 4 yrs) He forgot my birthday. Granted he was working out of town. The doctor I had been working with for 3 yrs had to call and remind him! The following year too! Thank goodness for my good friend and boss the doctor. Yep I know all to well my friend. So you tell me when yours is and I will remember! he he

Wow... we're getting that same ice storm. It's crazy b/c at here at work, it's just snow, but back home (50 miles south) it's all ice and even the interstates aren't cleared yet. Getting into work this morning was HELL and that was with a 4-wheel drive!

Susie had iceballs in her feet this morning. She would rather be outside than in, so she has ice in her mane and tail/back too. Silly horses.
