Off we went yesterday morning to the tailgate the Law School was hosting at the game. I had not been to a SIU tailgate for 10 years, and that was back in the day when Carbondale was voted Worst College Sports town in the country. I have no tolerance for that, but then again, we could not play football to save our lives, so what was to get psyched about?
It was fun, actually, I got to see Neil and Laurie, and meet their kids--Neil was the only other person from the Class of 97 there. I talked to a few of my old professors and some of the deans that have moved on since my time there. Neil had some spart tickets so we went to the football game, which I was questioning the wisdom of at some point- it was over 90 degrees. In October for Petes Sake!
Left is a picture of one of the Dawgs--he is a Saluki. Everyone always asks what a Saluki is--so this is it. A funny looking dog, like a greyhound with long hair on its ears
They won though and it was a great game--24 to 17 with our last touchdown coming in the last two minutes. Things have changed there, and it is great to see the support the program is getting. It still has the feel of a high school game to me, though, even with almost a packed house of 13,000 people, but I guess that is to be expected with the 70,ooo people at Illinois games (and God knows, they have sucked lately, until this year and I am still not convinced).
There are some things you just do not see at an Illinois game, but evidently do at a SIU game. This dude, for example. He brought his goat to the game. We saw him at halftime when we were at a party in the parking lot. Now really, what the hell was this about?
After the game, we went to the law school for the reunion part. We had some amazing barbeque by Great Boars of Fire, who are a local BBQ caterer who competes all over the world in BBQ competitions. Their food is AMAZING! I ate so much, I was about to collapse, so we came home and I was crashed by 11 pm. That almost never happens. I sure did not need to stay and watch a bunch of liquored up lawyers jigging around to a Cajun band, that would maybe give me nightmares.
I guess it was worth going to, but it was a disappointment to not have anyone from our class there except Neil, and he has little choice since his wife is the Business Manager of the school.
