I have this kid across the street from me that helps us with everything. She waters everyone and keeps tabs on who is coming and going at the farm, and helps me feed, and tells Barr
y which horse is which, because he can never remember. She is a handy kid, and a huge help to have around. She is in fifth grade as of today.
Anyway, I have been telling her that when the weather breaks, I will bring Twister over and give her a ride. I know she is itching to get on him so bad she cannot stand it, so tonight, while we were doctoring Rock, I realized that it was not miserable hot and that she would do as well as Twist would and off we went. I figure that even with Rock only seeing out of one eye right now, she is still twice the horse most people ever sit on, so she would do just fine. And it also gave me the excuse to get back on her for the first time in a while-- always an ulterior motive with me!
She was so excited she was about to come out of her skin. She goes to horse camp and has ridden that type of horse a lot, but it has been a while and she was nervous when she first got up there. She relaxed and had a great time, so it was really fun for me too. What I would have given for that at her age, I cannot tell you, so I love doing this.
Rock may be 25 years old, and temporarily (we hope) blind as a bat in her right eye, but you would not know it to look at her or by how solid she was for her tonight. I was so proud!

YAY! for Madison (and you of course) - she looks like a pro at riding Rock..
Sure hope her eye comes around!
I sure wish I had a little girl like her live near me and help me! She looks so happy riding Rock.
Me too, the poor old girl. It is always something around here. I love that old mare--she has taught me so much and given me so much confidence. Last nite she gave me what for though- bucked and bucked like she was 3. Silly ol broad.
It was windy and tarps were blowing all over, snapping in the wind, and she cannot see a damn thing on her right side, and she NEVER so much as flinched with Madison on her.
I just dropped off the CD of pics at Walgreens to get some made for her, I got her a big 8 x 10 I am going to frame for her. I cannot wait to give them to her after work today
What a sweet idea of a picture! You should start a collection for her as she starts to ride more and more of your horses!
And Missy - I'll send my 9 year old down to you for summers, school breaks - she'd LOVE living it for real - not just "playing" (ie boarding as we do) a life like that -
She is SO jealous of Madison
Paige you are a sweetie to do that for Madison (?). It can be torture for a kid to love animals and not be able to handle them. She will remember you forever for this.
When she was little, she used to sit in her front yard across from the farm, and crawl around on all fours, whinnying and neighing at my babies. She spent hours out there.
I reminded her of it recently and she did not even get embarrassed, she just said "well I was little then".
How did she like her pictures??? When I was her age I spent every waking moment with my horses. I know how it is to be so in love with riding and just being around them.
Lorna, I am sure I would LOVE to have her around. My kids are all getting to be grown and don't think it's fun to work on the farm anymore. Although they have been helping me this summer more than usual. But me, I will die owning a horse, I don't think I could ever give it up. I am a country girl and always have been.
They sure make a nice looking pair. And Rock sure doesn't look 25. When I compare her to my two 20 year old's here she looks fantastic.
I am glad you are helping someone young live their dream...I had someone help me with mine when I was younger and it sure stuck.
