That makes it all worthwhile happened this morning. I have been keeping a special eye on my old horses like I always do, monitoring their weight gain and loss. Grandpa (27) got looking pretty good, but is backpedaling a little now, which is frustrating. Playmate (26) did the same thing...she is a little thinner than usual for this time of year, which truly breaks my heart as she is still such a dynamic horse, who loves to go go go and compete. Nita (26), for the first time ever, did not fatten up with the spring grass. She is otherwise happy as she can be, needs nothing special ever, but this weight thing tells me that she is not long for this world. I will not ask her for another winter if she does not pick up really well.

But TODAY, I saw this. Rock really does not winter well anymore, and every year, I panic that it is her last year. She is 25 now, and I have had her 7 years, and she has been my favorite ride all that time. No, she does not have the massive chest she used to have, and her butt might not be quite as big, and her topline is not that of her younger years, but overall, I am THRILLED with her condition this summer. She is still as cranky as ever, but she actually looks HAPPY in these pics. Happy is not her natural state--she is always boiling for a fight with someone (not me) so much that I swear people groan when they see her backing off the trailer.
I needed this kind of pick up in the midst of the fence saga.

She does look great and very happy almost wearing a smirk I'd say. I'm happy for you and her.
A smirk is a good description of it, I think
