Kid tested and mother approved!

Thanks Lorna for the good title!

After work today, mom came out to ride with Madison and me. I let her pick which one she wanted to ride and she picked Radar (well, I only gave her two choices, but still). It has been almost four years since a freak horse accident broke her back and she has only ridden a few times since then. It still hurts sometimes, and she is so busy playing golf and socializing that she does not have time to ride. The few times she has ridden, it has been on the same horse she was riding then, and although it makes her nervous, she has barrelled through and done it. I am not sure if she is brave or getting senile since she is almost 64, but it is cool that she still rides.

This was a big step though. I knew Radar was up to it, because lets face it, he is too lazy to act up unless I make him use a bit that is in the wrong place is his mouth. I did not do that today.

He was PERFECT for her. I could not have asked for more from him. We did not have trails to work with on most of our adventure, and we rode in some areas even I have never been on. There were lots of stickers and thick brush, and lots of wierd stuff underfoot that would get their feet tangled up---and Radar just kept plugging. He was so cute, picking up his feet all the way to his belly to get loose of the tangles...just a real trouper. He never so much as flinched at it, let alone acted up.

We had a good time, and this discovery of fun woods just behind Madison's house is very exciting--we have a whole new place to investigate. On the way home, we stopped and let her sister and the baby pet Rock. While we were waiting, Mom said "Dont you bet she is just in heaven?" Man I sure would have been! Which is what I said, and then realized that I still am. It is so much fun to get to share the horses with her. It is possible that it is pathetic that my best everyday riding buddy is eleven years old, but what can you do? It gets me out there, and I can feel virtuous about it. I may take her to Rend Lake to ride this weekend since BS has some 100 miles bike race that I dont think I can bear to sit through.

That reminds me--this is so cute. She bought us necklaces from Claire's. They are on suede strings, and they have a horse on them, and one says "Best" on it and one says "Friends". Is that the cutest thing you ever heard? She let me pick which one I wanted, so I took the friends one. I forgot to wear it today and she asked me about it, so I have to do something to make sure I do not forget tomorrow.

Yippee, skippee.. That's my boy! I am SO glad your Mom felt comfortable riding him and that he was an angel!

The necklace and riding buddy thing with Madi is great - I am certain it is EVERY young girl's dream she is living and this is something she will cherish forever!

Mom is the cause of all this mess--she had the horse bug first, since she was little. Her Dad used to ask her on every holiday or event if she had lokoed in the backyard for her present, and never was there a horse until the one year she refused to look--she was slow to catch on to his tricks. That year, there finally was one!

She even had a cutting mare, so she is used to my little wiggles

It is NOT pathetic that Madison is your best riding buddy. It's wonderful....w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l. It's good for you (you get out and ride) and it's probably the best thing you could do for her....a horse and a role model. And as for the necklace....that's just sweet.

I've said for a long time now, you never know what will happen when you touch another life, sometimes you change another person so much for the better that you can't know what you saved them from. These are the times she will remember for the rest of her life. And you should too.

and your mom is entirely too cool. Good for her!

You said your mom has been busy playing golf and such, just wait till that little Gabi gets here. Whick reminds me I need to go check on Mandy's page.

Well she does that the rest of the time-- obsesses about Gabi. She has agreed to nanny for Mandy when seh arrives, which means she will have to cut her golf playing from every day to only three days a week--something I never thought I would see!

I do love the horses and can identify with Madison. My heart would skip a beat when I got close enough to smell a horse. Consequently, I plead guilty to planting the passion in my beloved daughter. Sharing the passion and spending time with one of the people I love most in the world is...well, it just doesn't get any better than that.
Very touching story about Madison exposes that well-covered side of Paige Strawn. She's lucky to get to see that quality.
I hope to be riding with you, Paige, for the rest of my life.
Love you too much,
Mom
