Unnecessarily fat?

Why are these horses so fat? I am not anti-fat (at least not until it gets to a much more serious point) but I do not understand this. There is no grass and has really not been any to speak of in months due to the drought. They are on round bales which admittedly, they are blowing through like they are air, and only one feeding a day. Snap is even nursing, and still packing this big tummy. She has a shadow of rib oddly, but I think she is bigger now at 3 months in foal than she was at full-term with Cricket. If you do not know how slight she is in real life, you might not get the full effect of this photo, but for those of you that know her, you can probably see what I mean. (Julie, this is the one you rode on Memorial Day last year that you kept parking upside down on the hill when she wanted to join the crowd against your will) Posting all these pics gives me a good reference point for the changes, which is why I keep doing it (that and there is nothing on TV tonight).

Slygirl has been home from the trainer less than a month and looked great when she got here but she has blown up like a ballpark frank. I guess I probably did not need to order that tiny girth after all! They are dewormed religiously, and with temps of over 100 degrees practically every day for weeks, many of the horses are really struggling. But not all of them, obviously!

I wish they were more like machines---feed them this, get this result. Add this, this happens. Take that away, it will fix this. The only thing that works universally on all of them is good lush pasture and it is the one thing we have not had this year and that no amount of money can get us. It makes me crazy to see these two and others like them, then look across the driveway to the seniors' pasture where they are really struggling, no matter how much senior, beet pulp and oil I pour to them every day. I feel like I am failing them, even though I know better.

Such is life at Onn-A-Wym Farms--always something to be tweaked, scrapped or rejuvenated!

Snap looks simply adorable and I'll tell you what - Cricket IS my favorite baby of this crop! Maybe I'm biased because of Snap - don't know - but she is such a darling!

Snap's sweet, wants to be your friend personality (not that Sly doesn't) sure came thru in that little monkey!

Can't wait to see Snap's baby next year too!

And Slygirl is just stunning. I don't remember her from years past but she has a "presence" about her that makes you look at her.

She's going to be someone's GREAT, not just "good" mare!

I kind of like that little monkey myself--she has the sweetest personality, along with Harley. Cricket got mad at me over the Wormer the other day, but it did not last long. I guess the combo of sweet sweet Snap and sweet sly really matched up right in this one.

And Slygirl has just been living in the back pasture growing into a big girl, so you probably never saw much of her--it is always hot when you are here!

They all look really good to me, but your pictures are small so maybe if I was there in person they would look fatter.

What kind of hay are you feeding them? Are you feeding those protein tubs from TSC this year?

I guess some do better in the heat than others, I have a mare that was breathing hard because of the heat and then some that it doesn't even bother...

I have not been feeding them yet, because I am supplementing with Born to Win which addresses the protein issue. I might get back to them though--it is just such a menace to go fetch them, and move them --they weigh 200 pounds. Are you using them this year?

The hay they are on now is the hay we raised, mostly a grass mix as the alfalfa burned up from the heat.

I think a lot of it is just the heat. My old girl Susie is not gaining, and I think she has lost a bit, but she isn't skinny, just not fat. I am sure she will gain it back when it cools off. Even in the shade they are just drenched with sweat. I have no idea other than that...

They are all pretty though :) I love your pics.

I'm with Melissa, maybe if I was there they would look fatter. They look pretty good to me. All of my horses are sweating just standing in the shade.
